Relaxing Wednesday afteroon

I took my little 2wt rod out yesterday to see if the bluegills had woken up yet. For the purists, sorry, not bamboo, but 7' and an ounce and three-quarters of Winston IM6 graphite. They hadn't, at least not in the first place I tried, a spot I call Jessie's because it's just sround the corner from my daughter's house. Spent a couple hours there with only a dunk or two and nary a nibble. I hated to get skunked so I wheeled around to Caywood Lake. Found them much more cooperative there; several gills - no trophies but nice fat 8-9-inchers, and a few small bass. Released all. I left my bag in the truck, including my forceps so when the last gill ate my fly I had to bite him off and called it a day.

Phil, nice rod. I fished in my pond yesterday with my Phillipson Pacemaker and a Saracione reel trying to grab a bass or two, but the water is still only 50 degrees. Took a bluegill and my streamer was bigger than he.

I'm not a terribly big John Gierach fan, but his book from 1996 "Fishing Bamboo" is a dangerous quick read. I rarely read a book twice, I've read this 3-4 times and after each one I am on the Spinoza web site shopping for a Leonard, Gillum or Garrison. I have not written the check yet, not sure I ever will, but that book sure makes we want to. Tight lines.

Phil, I’m surprised the wind didn’t blow you and that nice rod away. We’ve had 45 mph winds for the past week. No time for poppers…and very difficult to hear turkeys on the roost.

Andy, I have John’s book and I have several bamboo rods, including a Glenn Brackett-era Winston 7-1/2’ 4wt that is my dream rod. I also have 4 glass rods and graphite rods in 2 through 9wt. I enjoy them all.

Garry, yesterday was the day between winds! Had to take advantage of it!

Phil if you get to Upstate NY I'll bring you to my club, the DeBruce Fly Fishing Club, where Nick Lyons and Sparse Grey Hackle were members, among many other notable figures. Two miles of private water on the Willowemoc. It is a gift to belong to it and that Glen Brackett Winston would absolutely sing there! I am still kicking myself for not buying a Ron Kusse rod ten years ago when he told me he had cancer and it was one that a customer failed to complete the purchase on. 8' #5 and he was asking the balance due, $800, and for some reason I thought it was priced high. He said I could drive out and cast it, and I said I'd think about it and never remembered. We live, kick ourselves in the ass, and learn.

Thanks Andy; I'm afraid I'd be a little out of my league there! Here's my little Winston; it connected with a few bass last week...

is that a Hardy Marquis in that case? (or SA equivalent )

Phil Yearout 04-28-2024 05:22 PM

Yep. It's a Hardy Marquis/Scientific Anglers 50th anniversary reel.
