Recoil pad melt down
5 Attachment(s)
Has anyone had this happen? I was looking for some wood the other day and when I opened the drawer of this cabinet I noticed this puddle below a Krieghoff stock. When I picked the stock up and looked at it I thought it melted as a result of heat, but this has never been anywhere near heat. This is a HiViz X Coil.

I had a Limbsaver pad that did this exact thing.
|
I have seen similar happen to a gooey pad.
|
Any solvent near it??
|
I was thinking maybe solvent too. Even solvent fumes can soften rubber or other plastics like that.
|
There is a reaction that takes place between 2 types of plastic. I have seen it in a tackle box containing different plastic lures and the plastic boxes wire leader crimps came in the boxes liquified and other fishermen told of similar experiences.

Recently discovered the grip cap on my Ithaca SKB, vintage 78, curled up like a pig snout! No heat anywhere near it. Of coarse it is plastic.
|
same thing with me, limb saver just turned to mush , sitting in rack.

Solvent
No Ed, no solvents anywhere near it. The company didn't provide any explanation except to offer another one for free.
|
Solvents still degassing from the cabinet finish??
|
What in tarnation?

Back in the late 70's. When shag carpet was still a thing. A friend of mine wiped down his Ruger Red Label and put it under his bed. When he tried to pull it out a few weeks later it was melted into the carpet. Nasty

Had the same thing happen with the stock gel pad on an 1187Rem. Special Purpose deer
gun. Remember how the old rubber nightcrawlers would melt in your tackle box, kind of like that. |
Many kinds of plastics and no part manufacturer makes his own plastic. Some is poorly formulated, generally the cheapest or sold as quality when its not.
At the Plastic suppliers recently for some Delrin, for a small part that was critical & expensive if it fails, guy puts the material on the counter. No DuPont “Delrin” stamp. Delrin price poor quality substitute. Insisted on the real thing he replaced it no change in price. You would think the pad manufacturer would figure it out, may have tried to save a few penny's. I recently had a Galco leather slip on pad turn wet and gooey like someone poured a pint of motor oil into it. The pad was on a gun at the time and nothing appeared strange about the gun at all. Now, weeks later, the pad is still gooey and can't be used.

I have a Beretta 390 which came to me (used) with a Sims pad that was sticky. I replaced it with the standard Beretta pad. I figured it must've been exposed to solvent of some kind. I have used their limb vibration dampers for years on my bows and never had anything like this happen.

May have something to do with Ozone in atmosphere, just a wild guess
|
I have ground and fit lots of pads in the past 10 years and I had several limbsaver pads get sticky and start to melt for me.I suspected gun oil but I usually don't wipe down the pad..Havent had it happen to any other brand. They are nice soft pads though.

It happens to other supposedly good quality items as well. I had a four spoke steering wheel that was an option on 1971-1972 Chevelles and Monte Carlos hanging in my garage for over a decade. When I put it on a 72 Monte Carlo and drove the car, you could not let go of the wheel. When the sun came out it became gooey. When it was cold, it was OK. Pattern was still there and it was not worn, just oozed when warm. But I guess it was not supposed to last fifty years.
|
I bought a 3/4T F-250 out of a Safeway parking lot in Havre Montana some years back, picked up some spare oil and a rubbery steering wheel cover and headed home to Alaska. Before long I was sneezing almost constantly and I narrowed it down to the stinky steering wheel cover. It was degassing some nasty offensive VOC's that made it really stinky when it got warm. I eventually pulled into some kind of truck stop, pulled it off and tossed into a trash can. Problem solved.

All this has been anticipated by Salvador Dali.
