The company says that Frank Hoppe started mixing Hoppe's #9 in 1903.

Cool can!

thanks guys - i have seen others for sale- never with a time period listed

i got this one in a local antique show simply because of its condition.

but, i am thinking of using it in a photo set up with a gun and other artifacts that are specifically to the early 1900's - and am trying to stay in that range- I'll bet this is later, 30's or 40's - just hoped someone might know

You might check eBay. Right now they have several Hoppe's items including a Hoppe's can just like the one you have. Among the other items are several boxes of old cleaning patches that have the same address for Hoppe's on them as your item and the copyright date for the info on the box "1946." Also wording on one of the boxes mentions the items are used by the "War Dept." Putting all this together, I submit that your can likely existed in or about the WWII era, early to mid-forties.

Rick,
A September 1936 copy of the Hunting and Fishing magazine has an advertisement for Hoppe's products, including a very similar oil can. The graphics are almost identical, but the address at the bottom of the can is:
Frank A. Hoppe, Inc.
2320 N. 8th st.
Philadelphia, Pa.

Rick....I have its twin (same address and all) and if my fading memory serves me, it was listed as a mid-40's can.
