Top Tang Screw
I found that Track of the Wolf sells a new top tang bolt for the Parker Hammer guns. It states that it is made for the No. 3 frame breechloading hammer guns and has been tested in the 10 and 12 gauges. The thing that puzzles me is that the specs call for a diameter of .235", which I remember to be about right. However the thread is described as "antique 8x36 thread". That diameter does not match a new size 8 bolt/screw. They have a 0.1" thick head for fitting and colse to 1.47" long. Anyone know the story here? Did 8x36 have a different meaning in the 70's/80's?
Interesting thing is that I could find no way to go to their site and locate the part in their listings. If you do a Google search and pick the right words, the link pops up. The part number is BOLT-8-36-PARKER-3 if anyone is interested. |
Lots of odd thread pitches in the parker process. give it a go.

The only other actual part for Parkers they sell is a good looking hammer screw.

Screw Sizes
I just got done making some Screws for my trigger plate along with hammer and lock screws for the hammer screws. The trigger plate screws were a slightly oversize #8 (actual .169" dia.) with 34 TPI. All three were slightly oversize from the closest number size with unusual TPI except the small #2-56.

Screws were not standardised back when Parker started in business. Todays screws have a rolled thread.Screws for Parkers were probaby made on a screw machines throughout there manufacture. Tolerances during that era were not nearly as tight as the machines are capable of today. Oh yeh I have a 1/8-48 die at home, howver, I don't know it use.

Well, I recieved the screws and found they wouldn't fit. Too small. They are now listed as lock screws for the 3 frame hammer guns. I will check and see if they fit there.
I pulled 3 different top tang screws and checked the threads and sizes. As near as I can tell, they are exactly 5mm, though I am sure note by design. TOTW sells tang screws in this size for the Brown Bess but they are .8mm pitch. To bad they are not blank. The pitch on the locks screw is 24. A 10x24 bolt will screw in perfectly, just is too loose. |
I'll just throw this out there. If you can send me sketch with all the dimensions you want, I would make the screw (or two) for you. It would be soft and could be hardened in oil quench if necessary, with or without screwdriver slot for clocking purpose. No obligation, just an offer!

Or if anyone needs new tang screws, they can just ask me. I have many of them, new old stock and new manufacture.
