Any idea what wad RST uses for 10ga.??

I have been using the Remington SP-10 wad with 16 ga card wads for my 1 1/8oz loads. Does anyone know what RST uses for a plastic wad, no filler wads required??

Morris Baker gave me enough 10 gauge shells to win the Southern 14 years ago and those shells had fiber wads. Looked like snow in the smoke. I have not cut one of his shells open to compare his wad to an SP-10 as the SP-10 has served me well with 1 1/8 & 1 1/4 oz loads.

Correct me if I’m wrong but other then the SP-10 isn’t there only one other 10 gauge cup wad for lead shot ? Think it’s an Italian wad in the BPI catalog . And of course I’m Aware of a couple others but they’re made specifically for steel .

PT1044 is the other wad that Sika is talking about. They are similar in size but the PT1044 holds slightly less. Also I find the PT1044 a little easier to slip past ragged case mouths.

SP10 will hold 632 gr. #9 lead without filler. Over powder skirt measures .754
Petal height is right at 1".

PT1044 will hold 630 gr. Over powder measures .746
Petal height is right at .91 inch.

Were you saying or asking if filler wads were used ? I've used both of those two wads and both require a filler wad with our light loads. A pretty bulky powder would have to be used to get away from filler wads. I can't think of any but maybe someone has more experience with other powders.

Paul what I wanted to know is if RST uses card filler wads or do they have a custom wad which requires no filler wads?? If they do have a custom wad is it available to the reloader.

I think, but not sure, they use the same powders and wads we can buy. At least when we had that powder shortage, they too had trouble keeping up with orders. At one of my SxS Shoots someone left a nice leather shot bag full of 12ga 1oz RST shells. We had it in the closet in the shotgun office for two years before we found the rightful owner and got it returned. One day I ran short two shells on the SCs course so I scooted back to the club house and took two RST shells. Man were they nice shooting - as soft as my 3/4oz loads. Anyways, 10ga shells are a lot heavier than what we use for target shooting. Maybe someone could contact them and ask. They seem pretty open about what they use. I'll jump over to their web site and see if I can send a email and ask.

I just called RST and the man who runs the loading told me they use the SP-10 wad and a 16ga card for filler. He said the SP-10 was a better wad than BPIs. He claimed the base was a bit small in diameter so some gas could leak by keeping pressure down. He said it would still seal and was consistent. Also said it was a bit higher so a little less filler wad was needed. I didn't think of asking what powder was used.

Thanks Paul.

I use the SP10 wad and after dropping it I slide 4 red beans down the wad guide (really easy) and then pull the handle down half way to drop 1 1/8 oz of shot. I have patterned it and see no effect on the pattern. It is easier and less expensive than what I usually use which is two 1/8" cards. It is also available at every supermarket. If your results vary. let me know please.
