I don't think Rich will mind if I show his wonderful Gunners gun, along with my Matties gun to show what I think are two of the most beautiful pieces of wood I have seen in a long time! gary

I don't mind at all. I love nice wood as well so I'll share a couple more

Dean Romig 08-21-2016 10:39 PM

That second one is your H&H 20 bore, right Rich?

.

Rich Anderson 08-22-2016 06:57 AM

That's right Dean. The first one is a restock of a Fox up graded to XE 16, the third is the custom 275 Rigby, fourth is an up graded AAHE 28 and the last is a custom Ruger #1 7MM-08.

Bill Holcombe 08-23-2016 03:52 PM

Thanks for sharing! Its these pictures right here that make me want to freshen up a dark but original finish parker stock so that you can see the grain again and not just a dark dirty stock that has original finish.

Bill here are a couple before and after photos of a GHE 20 that I freshened up the wood. Scrape off a 100 years of dirt and crud and you might be surprised at what you find.

Bill Holcombe 08-23-2016 04:39 PM

I had seen that post before and thank you again for showing it. So you don't have an issue with cleaning up a dark dirty stock to see the grain again even if it means removing "original" finish?

Rich Anderson 08-23-2016 04:44 PM

I've had this gun for several years and the finish was sticky and it was just cruddy looking so I had it tuned up some. I like it better now and I don't think it hurts the value. I showed it to the person I bought it from and he couldn't believe it and said he buy it back at a handsome profit. Needless to say I wasn't interested as a Damascus barreled 20 isn't that easy to come by.

Dean Romig 08-23-2016 04:56 PM

Very nice Rich!

But I certainly wouldn't do it to a gun that exhibited at least 70% or 80% of its original condition.

Rich Anderson 08-23-2016 05:03 PM

I wouldn't either but this one IMHO needed and benefitted from some TLC. You could scrape the finish off with a fingernail:eek:

Grade 4 SBT and a VH with factory Grade 4 wood and checkering

Jeff Kuss 01-30-2017 09:35 PM

:rotf:Greg,
Can I borrow the Vh next year at Rock Mt?
Jeff

Gregory Miller 01-30-2017 09:36 PM

Maybe I should claim my VH as both the earliest and the latest VH with factory grade 4 checkering Never say never with a Parker. Kenny Waite Jr (RIP) who spent his career at Remington surmised this gun was a promotional to get a major Remington dealer to stock Parkers. Kenny had been told that when Remington bought Parker that there was a big push to get Remington Dealers on Board. He says if the dealer agreed, they would do something for the dealer as a gift. The gun was completed in december of 1935. Kenny said rail road freignt charges were cheap that time of year and remington would send a rail car filled with ammo and guns to regional distributors that time of year. Kenny a is sadly gone on to the western grouse fiields. Maybe some here can bring credence or doubt to this first hand story from ome of the Remington guy who taught me so much

Gregory Miller 01-30-2017 09:40 PM

Jeff, sure. And Lou Rotelli is going through the 16 you won with year Before. He makes lovely screws and is replacing two and is reinforcing one spot inside the stock he felt was starting to develop a crack. Glad it was caught early before did any harm

Nice Kevin - a Fox?

Here's one that Chris Dawe restored for me. It is from my Bernard barreled, 1-frame, 12 ga., Grade-4 hammer gun. The wood is original to the gun. I may have shown this one before.

A CHE 20 from the capable hands of Russ Bickel and a VHE 28.

Kevin McCormack 01-31-2017 11:59 AM

Right Dean - gun is a Fox 12 ga. 30" X/DE Special restocked by Dan Rossiter a year or so ago.

tom tutwiler 01-31-2017 08:46 PM

Another Dan Rossiter restock/conversion of a sterly into a early D grade in 16 gauge using Feathercrotch Turkish:

This is the stock on a 1903 GH that I once owned.
When I first got this gun you couldn't see any grain at all it was so cruddy and the DHBP was worn and missing almost half of it. I brought it to this condition after several hours of work.

charlie cleveland 02-25-2017 12:58 PM

mighty nice wood if you lived closer dean i would bring my old ph 10ga over...ha charlie

Dean Romig 02-25-2017 01:15 PM

Nah, bring it to Brian - I'm just an amateur.

.

Gerald McPherson 07-06-2017 08:44 PM

Dean: There is something extraordinary about that wood. Is that black walnut?

Dean Romig 07-06-2017 09:39 PM

American Black Walnut on a 1902 12ga. GH with 27" Damascus barrels.

I refinished the wood myself. But I can't take all the credit - the wood would be pretty no matter who did it.
