Anyone reload the 16ga Remington hulls - wondering how long they are before loading.

Paul, All I reload for 16 gauge is the black Remington hulls. The AOL vary on these hulls depending on the shot size they were loaded with at the factory. Here are some specs. These dimensions are from the underside of the flange to the end of an open crimp.

1)Remington/Peters hulls marked #8 shot= 1.647

2)Remington marked #7 1/2 shot =1.685

3)Remington /Peters marked #6 shot= 1.685

Couple of things to note here the peters hull are 8 point crimp and the Remington Game loads are 6 point crimp.

I have noticed this difference in hull length is consistent between with #8 hulls being the shortest. Just takes a little getting used to when reloading but no big deal.

You will also notice that about all you get is three reloads tops, before these hulls split at the crimp folds and die. For longevity, I've had much better luck with the Cheddite hulls that Graff sells in bulk.

I don't agree. I have reloaded these hulls 6 plus times before chucking them. A lot has to do with the load you use in them. I load mine fairly light and most times they are loaded as spreaders.

Who am I to argue with success?

I also load the Rem. hulls in 16ga. and have found I can get 4-6 reloads out of them before they split or become too brittle. I have heard of others complaining about them splitting but I, like Dave, load very light 3/4oz loads and I believe that has something to do with it.

Dave, you must have hit the wrong button - I would have thought the shell to be around 2 3/4" - not 1.68. Did you mean 2.68 ? That would be close to 2 5/8 - right ? The reason I ask is that on another reloading forum a fellow is claiming his are 2 9/16 and I thought maybe he picked up some that were trimmed. I thought 2 3/4 was pretty much the standard today.

Yup..I messed up they are 2.685 etc. Sorry....:banghead:

Daryl and Dave,

My experience with 16 ga Game loads mirrors yours with the number of times a hull can be loaded, again I load 7/8 oz of 8's with light poweder charges. I must have some older black Game Loads as some have 8 point crimps, although most have the 6pt crimp.

Jack, The Peters game load hulls are 8 point crimp. If I am going to reload a bunch of Peters hulls I just change my crimp starter to the 8 point one. No muss no fuss.

That shows just how observant I am. If it is a black hull I just assumed it was a Remington Game load, never looked at the hull base. Thanks.

I've loaded quite a few 16s and have had good luck with the chedite hulls or federal game load purple ones, they seem to take the same loads equally well.

I load a variety of 16 gauge hulls and none of them are consistent in their dimension, which is supposed to be 2 3/4". The difference runs from 20 to 30 thousandths short. Never oversize in length. The difference is not significant enough to cause reloading problems. My supply includes Federal paper and plastic, Winchester CF and PF, Remington black and Rem green papers.

I don't know John. I have a few thousand lying around here and I have found this difference in length to be very consistant depending on the shot size marked on the hull.

Come on Dave, those cheap Rem. game load hulls split on the first firing, right out of the box. :rotf::rotf: :bigbye:

Dave, maybe your HOT loads are causing the plastic to melt and get brittle.:rotf: I don't know about 16ga, but the 12ga game loads last as long as the STS or Nitro's.

I've got a small bag of black plastic Remington ribbed 16ga shells that I bought in 1965...! They're still fine.....I think... I know I killed my first woodcock with a Mod 11 and a shell from that box.
