Based on articles in the DGJ, shotguns larger than 10 bore were banned from migratory bird hunting. This happened in 1913(?) or thereabouts. I cannot say whether any other game is allowed to be taken with them, though. I don't see why not. I have never looked further than the DGJ articles.

Sure, they made them in hammer and hammerless. They're illegal for any migratory game like ducks and geese but in some states you can still use them for deer and turkey hunting. There are some members of the forum that do this actually.

Check your state reg's very close. Several states have the 10ga as the largest legal shotgun for hunting anything.

Do not some states allow 10ga Chamber Mates to be used in 8ga for waterfowl? I believe Wisconsin is voting to allow this, this spring.

Was sure a sad day when they "benched" those guns.

i hope wisconsin passes the use of gage mates in the 8 ga..this might start other states into letting the 8 be used again...ive always liked the large bore guns.... charlie

I hope that Wisconsin has checked with Mr. Obama. The prohibition on eight gauges for migratory birds is a Federal regulation.

New York state allows you to hunt anything but migratory waterfowl with an 8ga.---Phesants, crows, rabbits, deer, bear, grouse etc. all require a porter to carry the gun. Turkeys do not.

You also are allowed to hunt bare ---in remote areas.

You should be able to use an 8 gauge with chamber mates for waterfowling anywhere in the US. If you've got 10 or 12 gauge shells in it then it's a 10 or 12 gauge no matter the bore size. I don't believe there's a warden in the US that would give you any trouble over that one. If you don't have 8 gauge shells on you then you aren't using an 8 gauge gun, it's just that simple.

I agree with Destry on that one. Of course, Destry and I are not generally "chambermate" kind of guys. We like the big bullets.

What Destry says is correct, however the State of Wisconsin regulation is miss-worded unintentionally and does not follow the Federal Regulation exactly so we are tying to switch the state verbiage to match the federal.
