How hot are cci primers? I noticed on Sherman Bells charts that Fed. primers raised pressure. ch

Accrding to Tom Armbrust, CCI's are near the top of the list for generating high pressures.

I thought standard CCI's were a "mild" primer close to Win 209's. I think CCI makes two, a standard 209 and "Magnum" 209, the CCI 209M. Fed 209A's are considered a "magnum" or hot primer as well and raise pressures in most loadings. I am pretty sure I read somewhere that Federal came out with an even hotter primer. If my recall is correct Remington 209P is about the mildest of primers.

I think the best way to tell is to go into the reloading recipes in the on-line Alliant manual or Hodgdon and look at loads where all things are equal except the primer choice.

I have a chart around here someplace that shows the pressure differences of different primers. I will try to post it later. I know that Federals and CCIm are at the top of the list. I believe the regular CCI is middle of the road.

10 gauge shooters be careful.

This is taken from the Ballistic Products website for new 3.5" 10ga federal hulls they offer for sale. This is the new federal primer I thought I had heard about.

"Federal 10-gauge new hulls primed with a Federal 239 primers and ready to load. Limited run of hulls now available from Ballistic Products. The Federal hulls are used for almost all current load data in lead, steel, bismuth and Hevi-shot. Brown, skived. 50 per bag. Note: ***The Federal hulls in 12-gauge 3.5" and the Federal 10-gauge hull new, unfired hulls are made with a new primer. This is the FED239 primer. A string primer designed to give a boost (firm start) to ALLIANT STEEL propellant and other slow burn rate powders utilized in heavy loads. (Thus far, the FED239 primer has not been offered as a reloading component.) It has been found that the FED239 elevates pressures with some of the older loading data which calls for the FED209A primer. Until specific reloading data is generated, on first firing of these hulls made with the FED239 primer, the reloader is advised to reduce the load propellant amount by three grains."

The bad thing is, if you try this same test with a completely different load, in say 16 gauge. Those primers will be in different locations. I've tested enough loads to know that they will act differently in different loads. Sure, you're magnum primers will always be at the top. But the others will move around. If you're not following a specific tested load, the only way you'll know for sure how a primer swap will change the load, is to have it tested.

Thanks for the info Dave. Interesting stuff..About the only primers I interchange are Remington 209 for Winchester 209.They are pretty much all I use.
