On Saturday Jent first hunted deer on my place but came up empty. At noon my neighbor invited us to shoot sporting clays at his place and to hunt deer at evening fall. This doe was shot by Jent Mitchell at 260 yrds., through the heart with his 243 Ruger #1. He says it was luck?

Congratulations to Jent. The 243 is a great little cartridge for deer but with a max 120 grain head you have to hit them really good.

And it sure looks like he hit that one really good too.

There's nothing like a Ruger No. 1 to teach a man to make that first shot count!

Jent, nice doe. Will the venison jerky/pepper sticks/bologna be ready by Dec 30th at Lehigh Valley??

Setters really get psyched when exposed to dead whitetail. Congratulations, Jent.

When I pulled a big buck out of the bed of my truck and dragged it to a shady spot where it would keep overnight until I could butcher it my 8 year old female lab (the most sensitive and empathetic dog I have ever known) layed down beside the buck and laid her head on his neck. She wouldn't move from that spot for hours..... go figure

How many ticks did you have to pull off the lab?

None at all Larry, my deer are taken in a section of Vermont where there are no ticks of any variety. We're pretty lucky in that respect, so far.

That's an impressive shot for a .243 and a very big doe; good thing he hit it well. I killed a deer at 150yds once with a .22LR and hit it similarly well. It jumped up once and piled up right on the spot from a perfect heart shot. THAT shot was more luck than skill for sure.... the things we do when we're young, eh?

That was a skillful shot Jent. Seems you have to have skill to aquire luck. Nice doe. ch
