Interesting thread on Trapshooters.com

It is a SC that appears to have a higher grade replacement stock, possibly by Remington; 48' and 51' repair date codes.

I suppose anything is possible, but the idea of that stock coming out of the factory (Remington) is somewhat of a stretch.

Frankly, I wouldn't rule out the possibility of the stock being of Remington origin.

case in point being the stock and forend on Russ Jackson's CHE 20 gauge.

I know that trap shooters can not possibly leave a gun alone, but why in the world would you cut the barrels on a SBT????

John, a year or two ago we had a fellow on here looking to buy a SBT 20 gauge Parker so he could chop the barrel down to something manageable for grouse and woodcock in thick cover.... Honest John, I ain't lyin'...

Apparently a after the barrel was cut there was enough choke remaining to measure IC. That will break a 16 yard target. Wouldn’t recommend it.....

I've wondered the same thing. Orphan Annie has had her barrel cut from 34" to just about 28". Car door? Somebody wanting to use her for a hunting gun? I'll never know. I've never actually measured the choke; all I know is that my drop in gauge stops between full and IM. She breaks 16 yarders just fine; I've rarely shot anything longer with her and she did OK; it was hard to tell whether the misses were the fault of the gun or the shooter . Regardless, she's been a lot of fun for a guy who doesn't take trap shooting too seriously. I have the same deal with all my guns: I don't point out their faults and they don't point out mine :).

I have a Parker single barrel with a Cutts compensator that is a neat hunting gun. It is a mismatched second barrel for one of my SCs. I wouldn't cut down the 34" barrel of my 20 gauge SC though.

Some hunting companions and I were talking about this the other day. Does a few more inches on a barrel really make one that much more manuverable in the woods???

No Brian. That’s a state of mind. But I must admit I like 24” or 26” a lot more than longer barrels.

Short black barrels matter.

Some folks think those long barreled guns are great for the prairie, but have you ever tried to get one out of a pickup in a hurry :)?

Back when I still attempted to grouse hunt in the mountains of VA generally my shotguns were 24 or 26 inches however as you say I can’t remmember being in any situations 28 or even 30 inch barrels would’ve been an impediment. On the other hand however I’ve been in some situations doing drives for deer that short barreled guns were the rule of thumb and a lot of times a necessity ! Point in fact a bunch of times on Chincoteague NWR I’ve been in some spots and seen Sika deer where a 24” barrel would get hung in the wild rose or some other devil bush . Been in some spots in central VA in the last six or seven years on deer drives that were very very tight as well . Hence the reason I want one of the factory original EH 24” barreled gun

I have a beautiful grade 6 Ithaca SBT which letters to 34”. It now sits at 28”. Why the barrel was cut is anyone’s guess. It also had the forend very professionally drilled and lead added in order to balance the gun. Don’t recall but I believe it has .018 choke.
What a shame on such a valuable and rare gun.

Phil, I have seen a bunch of valuable and rare guns similarly butchered - it's really a crying shame to be witness to such ignorance.

Kind of like chokes. Choke is all mental. Your core will be very similar and that is what you want to break targets with. That gives you the "diesel smoke" breaks we so love. Guys ask me all the time what chokes to use on our course. I tell them to focus on the target and work on your mount instead of changing chokes. They wind up being amazed at the difference that makes.

Dean, when it comes to hunting guns, I am like you and prefer the 26"-28" for the simple reason of less weight being carried through the woods. It may only be a mere couple of ounces, but when everything else hurts, those few ounces matter!!
