Thought I would start the first thread here. Took this grouse at the end of October with the right barrel of my 16 ga DH loaded with RST 2-1/2" paper hulls loaded with 1-oz of #8 shot. The bird folded and dropped like a rock - at a very long distance.

Great shot Jay. I love the 16 gage also they carry like a 20 but hit like a 12.

Jay,
Nice pic, healthy looking bird and awsome looking gun. The dog and I have been tramping the coverts as well, with my 26" tubed 16 ga VH, using RST'S #8 & #9 and having great success. Thanks for sharing.

Best regards R Rambler

Nice bird and pic, Jay. Our grouse hunting was weak in my area of Maine this year. Woodcock better but they did not come through til early Nov and season closed end of Oct.

Thanks to all for getting on our new site. Our volunteers make it happen and without them we could not inch forward. I know how they give freely of their time.

Ben, Nothing wrong with a Vh you can hit Ruffed Grouse with ! I would love to see the eyes on that dog ,I don't think he can believe that grouse is perched on top of your gun barrels !

Nothing better than a brown-phase ruffed grouse and a Chocolate Lab. Mine had yellow eyes, how about yours?
My Tobie has been gone two years now, man did she love grouse! She had the best nose of any dog I have ever known.

Jessie's eyes are brown. When ever there is a bird around, alive or dead, her focus is dead on it. She is starting to get up there in age and slowing down a bit. I sure will miss her when the time comes.
