Fred Gilbert - who could do this today?

More nightime reading in some early 1904 American Fields, and I finally got around to posting today. Snowy day. Enjoy!

Here's a snapshot of Fred Gilbert shooting a Parker of course: 12,030 inanimate targets = 93.4% (that's about 13,000 targets attempted), and 219/220 on live birds.

He started with a Smith, then for the 1899 GAH switched to a Parker. Order Book No. 41 records BH SN 83855 placed into stock in January, 1896 consigned to Fred Gilbert. The stock book lists a D5 hammerless, 0 extras, straight stock,12 gauge, 30" barrels, Gun count 482, Damascus barrels.

Toward the end of 1901, Gilbert received his new Parker DH SN 103649; no dolls head, no ejectors, 32`barrels, ordered by Russia Klien in Iowa. The gun was returned to Parker Brothers in 1903 to be refurbished.

In 1917, Fred took delivery of a Parker SBT SN 180116. He continued to compete thereafter, but at a gradually slower pace, troubled by high blood pressure and arthritis. Remarkably, in 1919 at age 54 he made a straight run of 589

Fred Gilbert’s domination at the traps is clearly shown by his yearly averages. His average for all the years between 1897 and 1918 was 94.92 per cent on a total of 145,895 targets. For eight out of the eleven years between 1901 and 1911 he held the high average in either singles or doubles.

The old trophies are very nice but rarely are they seen for sale. They would make a nice addition to any gun room.

Yes, some of the old trophies are hard to find. The Gilbert Dupont trophy is a tough one. With years of collecting and you could end up with a shelf full...
