As we prepare for (hopefully) warmer temperatures for the Southern the end of April the usual suspects invite anyone who really wants to do some shooting to join us at nearby Drakes Landing in Fuquay-Varnia, NC.

I spoke to Dan Andrews the owner of Drakes Landing today and his new (and second) 100 target sporting clays course will be open as well as the 5 stand. That gives us three courses to shoot, NO waiting and it's a great place to burn powder, and he REALLY appreciates our patronage. With the added course we could develop some friendly competition in say a small bore, hammergun etc events. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

If I can get a pretty good head count Dan is willing to provide lunch and a dinner for a nominal fee. He also said he would get shirts for us so if you want one please get me your size.

Several of us will get in Wednesday night and shoot Thursday-Saturday at Drakes. There is plenty of time to walk the tents at Deep River and participate in the Challenge. I have averaged two guns bought at the Southern for ten years and even thou I shot at Drakes a lot I still got my purchases in:eek:

Maybe some of those "other" shooters from the Fox and Smith camps will come join us. Its a great time and a greater place to shoot.

Rooms for those wishing to stay closer to the shooting are available at nearby Quality Inn for $69/night.

Rich: I would love to join you guys Thursday, after that I will be manning the AH Fox booth. What time do you normally meet up at Drakes. Craig Larter

Rich Anderson

Craig glad to have you join us. I think we will meet at Drakes at 10am this will give us time for a liesurely round of clays and maybe some 5 stand and a little lunch if you would like it.

Put us down for 2 T-shirts, both XL, if there is sufficient interest. You know, we need to get started earlier if possible so we don't miss the gun show Friday evening.

Rich Anderson
01-30-2014, 04:20 PM
What gunshow are you referring to Mills?

Mills Morrison
01-30-2014, 04:23 PM
The Parker Gun foundation thing at Ruth's Chris

Rich Anderson
01-30-2014, 04:25 PM
I'm sure you will get in enough shooting and still make the dinner. Are you going to shoot Thursday as well?

Mills Morrison
01-30-2014, 04:28 PM
It will probably be just Friday for us. Like you say, I am sure we will get plenty of shooting

Mike.Smith
01-31-2014, 04:57 PM
Rich, I hope it goes without saying that I'm in for this, and my shirt size is also XL. Craig, I hope you are able to join us on Thursday for some fun before your Fox booth duties. Maybe a few of the other Foxers would be interested as well.

Craig, you're secret is safe with me. With all the shooting we'll do that weekend, I know both my Foxes and Parkers of all gauges will get a good workout!

Rich, I can already taste the Brisket....

The Parker foundation banquette will have a stunning display of some of Charley Greens' collection. I know Charlie and what he collects. These will be a group of stunning guns you have never seen and will probably never see again. Charlies likes ultra high condition, all original Parkers of all grades.

XL for me Rich. I agree Mark, it's a great place to shoot but it goes far beyond pulling the trigger. It's the most fun I have shooting, along with Hausmanns, and it's all due the the great comraderie and friendships we have established over the years. Let the games begin!:)

Harold Lee Pickens
02-01-2014, 10:15 PM
Now remember Rich, I will turn 60 at the shoot. Don't go to any trouble, but any O frame 16 ga hammer gun would be appreciated.

Rich Anderson
02-02-2014, 08:33 AM
Harold am I to assume you will be attending the festivities in April? I just happen to have a grade 2 16ga 0 frame with 30 inch bbls fresh from the expert craftmanship of Dale Edmonds for your 60th birthday........to shoot if you so desire:rotf:

Daryl you could not have said it better. The only thing I hope for this year, is that we get more people to come out and enjoy the courses at Drakes. I know last year some were asked not to go to Drakes to support Deep River but I think we showed that we can support the LC/Parker shoot and enjoy all the vendors and still have and still have a wonderful shoot at another club that appreciates our business .

ps. a large for me

FRANK HALSEY
02-03-2014, 01:41 PM
Ok. Where is Drake's?? Do they have a web site? Thanks, Frank

Rich Anderson
02-03-2014, 02:42 PM
Frank it's in Fuquay-Varina NC which is about 30min from Deep River. The web site is www.hunt@drakelanding.net You can also Google Drake Landing if this isn't the correct address. This is one of the best sporting clays courses I have ever shot. This year there are two 100 target courses with multiple shooting stations for each target presentation and a nicer bunch of people you ever meet. Please come join us for a round or two and see for yourself.

FRANK HALSEY
02-03-2014, 02:53 PM
Ok, looks like I have to go and shoot there at least one day. It looks too nice to let it pass. My size is a little bigger than you guys. XXL is what I need. Thanks, Frank

Rich Anderson
02-03-2014, 03:02 PM
Frank we will be shooting Thurs-Sat mostly in the am I would think so we can get to Deep River and spend some time ogeling guns and such. When you know what day you want to come just let me know.

You will absolutely love this course.

FRANK HALSEY
02-03-2014, 03:13 PM
I think that will be Friday. I get in on Thursday but than practice the 5 stand and look at guns that day. Friday, I can get away for at least the morning. I shoot 8 events at Deep River besides the Parker vs. LC Smith shoot so the most I can do is Friday morning. Thanks and I look forward to it. Frank

Eric Eis

Frank a lot of times DR is not setup on Thursday morning so why not shoot a round in the morning and then head over to DR in the afternoon. Just a thought

FRANK HALSEY
02-04-2014, 03:51 PM
I will be getting in about 1:00 P.M. that is why I shoot on Thursday. But I can get up early on Friday and shoot at Drake's. It does sound like a great place. Thanks, Frank

Rich Anderson
02-04-2014, 04:36 PM

FRANK HALSEY

I will be there. Looks great and a nice group to shoot with. What could be better!!!. I am dying to get out of the Chicago land area for a while. This has been the 2nd worse winter on record. I am READY for some warm weather. Frank

Rich Anderson
02-05-2014, 02:08 PM
Their website says 9am but I'm sure when I called the recorder said 10am. I'll firm up the time with Dan as we get closer.

Perhaps some of the group that will be there in Feb could clear this up. How about it Mills, David????

Frank I know what you mean about the weather its been a very long winter and we still have at least 8 weeks to go:eek:

Mills Morrison
02-05-2014, 05:33 PM
It does not make a huge difference to me. When we went up this Fall, I think we started at 10 and had plenty of time to get all the shooting we wanted. We can check when we are there this month, though

Harold Lee Pickens
02-21-2014, 12:34 PM
Rich,
OK, I'm in. Schedule cleared and hotel room booked. Are we shooting Thursday morning?

Rich Anderson
02-21-2014, 12:40 PM
Harold that GREAT glad to hear your coming. Did you make room reservations in Fuquay-Varnia?

Yes we will shoot Thursday am around 9 I think. I'll post times as we get closer

Mills Morrison
02-21-2014, 01:02 PM
Along the lines of room reservations, should we stay at the Quality Inn in Fuquay Varina? It is not the Ritz Carlton, but they have been pretty accommodating to us. I understand the Hampton Inn sold out. What say you all?

Rich Anderson
02-21-2014, 01:07 PM
Mills I have made reservations in Fuquay-Varina at the Quality Inn. Rooms are $69/night I believe. Mention The Parker Gun Club. Almost $30/night cheaper than the Hampton and much closer to the shooting:)

Mills Morrison
02-21-2014, 01:13 PM
Ok. Good. I will do the same and encourage others to join me and Rich. And Julia too.

Mills Morrison
02-21-2014, 01:53 PM
Just made my reservation. I thought it would be helpful to give the hotel info here. Just tell them you are with the Parker group. Hope we get a good group here.

Mills, Eric, myself and Daryl Coruna are staying there as is David Dwyer I believe and maybe Harold Pickens (he said he made reservations but not where) and there sould be quite a few others as well. I am so looking forward to this, only about 65 days to warmer weather and Parker fun:)

Mills Morrison
02-21-2014, 02:33 PM
We are still upset about being snowed out the other weekend. Hope some others will join and we will have fun. Well, we will already have fun, but will have more fun the more people from the group join in. Harold should be able to cancel and move to Quality Inn if he booked elsewhere.

Julia also mentioned a bus to the gun show at Ruth's Chris. Any interest there?

Eric Eis
02-21-2014, 03:03 PM
Mills how far away is Ruth Chris? I wanted to go since they are all friends but didn't want to have to drive miles  what city is it in?

Rich Anderson
02-21-2014, 03:18 PM
Eric I think it's in a town called Cary but not sure. I have no interest in traveling an hour more or less each way for dinner. Why this wasn't held at someplace like The Flame steakhouse in Sanford is beyond me.

We will have a great group at Drakes and as we get closer I'll ask for a head count as to who is shooting on what days so if we want Dan will have a lunch for us.

Mills Morrison
02-21-2014, 03:52 PM
I think Ruth Chris is closer to Fuquay Varina than Sanford, so we will be ahead of the game.

Mike.Smith
02-21-2014, 10:18 PM
Hey guys, the Quality in is literally about 2 miles from Drake Landing, and Drake Landing is not that far from the Southern. I'd venture to say that you'd drive as far from Sanford to get to Deep River as you would from Fuquay-Varina. You can jump on Highway 42 in Fuquay and head straight to Deep River.

As for Ruth Chris Steakhouse, it's directly across the street from where I work in Cary. Rich is correct, that from Fuquay it would take closer to an hour to get there (probably 45 - 50 minutes).

We ended up canceling this weekend's Drake Landing shoot altogether unfortunately. Lot's of people had things come up at the last minute, and the weather here today was severe Thunderstorms and a Tornado Warning. I'll likely go shoot tomorrow as it will be 70 degrees, but it won't be the same. I'm really looking forward to seeing everyone in April!

Rich, hope your shirt arrived?

Went shooting at Drake Landing on Saturday, and as I was finishing up, Dan Andrews flagged me down and asked me if I had my camera phone, and a few minutes to spare. He wanted to show me the new sporting clays course, and asked me to take some pictures to get you guys really fired up for April. :) It's not finished yet, but he's very close. It should be completed by mid March for an upcoming event. This is a sample of the stations, but not all of them. It's going to be AWESOME, and you won't believe the variation in elevation throughout the course.

The best part is that Dan is planning to reserve this course for more experienced shooters. If you need a safety briefing, or haven't shot much before, you'll be directed to shoot the old course. Dan has spared no expense with this new course, and it shows.

Who has a 28ga hammergun???
Small bore event should be 20,28,410. A hammergun event will work and I was thinking of a round as all true pairs. With two courses perhaps we could persuade Dan to set one up for pairs. We can do two man teams as well the sky is the limit.

David perhaps you can persuade your "friends" to have your small bore event at Drakes and get some more shooters into the mix.

Fjelline is a great guy and a good friend. He was operating a backhoe and a piece of cement flew into and penetrated his eye. He has a chance of not losing the eye and should know in 10 days. His comment to me was"I am left eye domenent anyways and will just learn to shoot left handed". He was in his shop working on a gun yesterday, 2 days after a four hour eye surgery. Tough guy!!

Wow, I dont know Dave, but I have been an optometrist in a medical setting for 30+ years, and have seen alot of ocular trauma. Hopefully, there was not much retinal damage. Our prayers are with him!

On another note, I was at our local NRA banquet last night and was talking to a couple of sporting clays shooters who are very good. I have shot with them and they are often 90+/100. They are going to the Southern SXS for the first time also. They are not into vintage guns(yet), and I believe shoot Beretta sxs's. Maybe I can get them to jjoin us for a round at Deep River.

It's getting close to spring....finally and time to start planning the activities at Drakes for Thursday April 24. I would like to get a head count of those who will shoot Thursday so we can plan for a lunch on the grounds. Dan said he would provide a meal at a nominal fee. Off the top of my head I count 15 or so shooters but lets be more accurate.

there will be lots of shooting on thursday so bring plenty of shells and a good appetite. Last years lunch was wonderfull.

Dean, Larry, Jim, Dave, and anyone that shoots a SxS, it's before the DR shoot so please join the fun. So far we have 11 confirmed shooters for Thursday so we can have two groups. I'm thinking a round or two of true pairs and some hammergun competition. We can draw names for teams and have some fun. I'm so looking forward to this, now if I can get the gun room cleaned out so I can actually get to a shotgun and some shells perhaps I can get in a little practice:whistle:

A little sidetrack--one of the courses i like to shoot has a "small bore" course. It is 50 targets laid out in a semicircle. You can shoot it with 1 gun, then are back to your car and can grab a different gun, and go again, etc. Its a great way to shoot a bunch of guns in one day. Also has a 5 stand, and a pyramid/wobble trap. Makes it easy to shoot 4 different guns in an afternoon. Wish more courses were like this--Briar Rabbit in Zanesville, Oh.
Something tells me Mark would not have any trouble shooting those smallbores. Just wrap a little lead tape around the barrels to slow them down a bit.

I would humbly suggest you institute a handicap system to your hammergun event. Maybe - 2 for 10ga, + 2 for 16ga + 4 for 20 ga and + 10 for 28ga(me:)
Marks 10 against my 28 is blantly unfair!!

Unfair? What about those "in your face targets" that I whack with Big Friend Ten or it's safe mates?

At least you don't have shells flying out of your gun.

The two Foxes I want are a Super Fox and an early C Grade. The Super Fox has been second on my list next to a Parker 8 for a long time.

A Sterlingworth 16 on the light frame was high on my list, but that one was crossed off this past year. For those of you small bore fans, I highly recommend them. Mine is just a great gun and even has the IC/M chokes

8&10 ga =-2, 12=O, 16ga =+3, 20ga=+5, 28ga=+10, +2 for a hammergun.

He's always doing thoughtful things like bringing out cool soft drinks during hot weather when a group of regulars is about 1/2 way around his course, or - as in our severe winter just past - coming out on his quad or Kyote with a carafe of java or hot chocolate when shooters are out in sub freezing and even single-digit temps. :) The owner there at Drakes sounds like he's a good guy too.

An end of an era has taken place. Since the beginning of the challenge the Southern has provided me with a new gun (once it was a rifle but a nice Pre 64 M70) or two. this year however nothing followed me home:crying::crying::crying: but there are two candidates that are in the wings:whistle:

Mills, what's the deal with the graded checkering on your new gun? What does the order card say about it? Who was the seller? OK, now I'll give you a rest.

Bill, The gun was featured in Frank Srebro's article in the AHFCA journal, I think Spring 2009. Check it out.

The shooting at Drakes was the best. Thanks Rich for putting it together. I know I will be back next year. I had a great southern, sold the vhe and che. Came home with a great super fox and a first edition of The Wilderness Hunter by TR. Met a bunch of new fox collectors and signed up many new members. Hope to see most everyone at Hausmanns.

Well, I guess not everybody from Wheeling shoots as bad as me. Apparently the 16 and 20 ga events were won by a gentleman from Wheeling. The 16 event was won with a borrowed Sterlingworth and the 20 ga with a Russian
Bakhail. I had talked to this group on Friday at the Southern and on Sat they came up to Drake's Landing--they were blown away with the courses and stated that they would be back to Drakes next year.
On a side note. Cabela's Wheeling has a display with 3 CE Foxes (12, 16, 20), and their factory letters--yes they are for sale @ $59,999.
Looking forward to seeing everybody again at Hausmann's.
